Everything starts with the idea.

This one began in a storm: facing the family court alone.

We researched every step, and wrote it in plain English, every claim sourced and dated.

We built the brand, and gave it a voice: calm, warm and honest.

Then we cast it: a family of claymation characters, sets and scenes, made to feel human.

And a website that tailors itself to whoever arrives.

“Researched, plain English guides, written for the person holding the form.”

Search it in your own words.

“The hardest part was not knowing what to expect.”

“If court has not started yet, almost everything is still yours to decide.”

Choose a guide, check out, and download it the moment you buy.

Chaos, to clarity.

From an idea, to something real.

The brief

People who go through the family court without a lawyer, known as litigants in person, face forms, hearings and language that assume legal training. They are often frightened, short of money and reading at night before a hearing. Litigant set out to give them researched, plain English guides to the family court in England and Wales, covering divorce, child arrangements, and money and property when separating. It had to be trustworthy without pretending to be a solicitor, and never offer legal advice.

The creative response

The brand and the product were designed together around one promise: replace chaos with clarity. Every claim names its source and the date it was last checked, and crisis support stays visible on every page. A short first visit question tailors the guides, the imagery and the language to the reader’s situation, and the answer stays on the reader’s device. The guides are organised into series, from orientation and before court to contact in practice and when it goes wrong.

The films are claymation, made to a written style guide: nobody mistakes a clay puppet for a solicitor, and the warmth of clay says what a suit never could. Each one is calm and honest, ends on a warm, forward looking line and closes on an end card generated from the real brand lockup. The site itself is a self contained shop in PHP and SQLite, with its own checkout, an admin area for orders, refunds and referrals, and an AI mentor pilot built on one rule: no unreviewed model output ever reaches a litigant.

The outcome

Litigant is live at litigant.guide, with its guide series, free resources and explainer films in one place. The reader meets a clear, calm product that respects how they feel, explains what each form is asking and what each hearing is for, and signposts help whenever it is needed.

Technical overview

How Litigant was built, and the challenges it meets.

A shop with no framework to maintain

The whole site is PHP and SQLite with no framework: guide pages, search, basket, checkout with Stripe and PayPal, instant PDF delivery and an admin area for orders, refunds and referrals. It runs on ordinary hosting and has nothing to patch but itself.

Search in the reader's own words

Readers type the question they actually have, such as a letter from Cafcass, and suggestions appear as they type, matched to the right guides rather than to legal vocabulary they may not know.

Tailored without tracking

A short first visit question shapes the guides, the imagery and the language to the reader's situation. The answer stays on the reader's device, never on a server.

Every claim sourced and dated

Each guide names its sources and carries the date they were last checked on its cover, so a frightened reader can see what the information rests on and how current it is.

Guardrails written into the build

England and Wales only, banned claim phrases, crisis support on every page, and one rule for the AI mentor pilot: it drafts into the admin, and no unreviewed model output ever reaches a litigant.

Films made to a style guide

The claymation explainer films follow a written style guide for characters, sets, voice and pace, and each closes on an end card generated from the real brand lockup.
